I should have said that my problem only occurs with dc fonts,
which is probably the only time I use mf rather than cmmf.
Also, it looks for 304 instead of 305, as in...


Running MakeTeXPK dcr17 304 300 1+5/300
mf \mode:=CanonCX; mag:=1+5/300; scrollmode; input dcr17
This is METAFONT, Version 2.71 (C version d)
...
(some charht values had to be adjusted by as much as 0.0982pt)
Font metrics written on dcr17.tfm.
Output written on dcr17.305gf (256 characters, 45056 bytes).
Transcript written on dcr17.log.
MakeTeXPK failed to make dcr17.304gf.
Can't find font dcr17; using cmr10 instead at 305 dpi
